About the VBF – here to help our veterans
Held annually at Parramatta Park, the Honour our Heroes Relay Walk is a community fundraising event which supports Australian Defence Force veterans in need of assistance.
The Relay Walk is one of a number of fundraisers run by the Veterans’ Benevolent Fund (VBF), which supports practical programs and services that help veterans or their immediate families.
Many Defence personnel return from active service suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress (PTS) as a result of the situations they confront in the line of duty. PTS can often mean returning to a normal life is difficult.
Used to defending and helping others, veterans are often reluctant to seek help for themselves. Without the right support, many suffer severe depression, leading to drug and alcohol dependence, anger and violence, homelessness, criminal behaviour and incarceration or, worse still, suicide.
The programs we fund – practical support
The nature of the programs and services the VBF funds varies.
In particular, the VBF supports the establishment and operations of Veterans’ Centres, delivering high quality, professional assistance and support to veterans with a range of complex needs. These Veterans’ Centres seek to assist veterans as soon as they discharge from the ADF to access relevant programs, financial support and services available for them.
The VBF also provides funding to services supporting homeless veterans, providing them with a home, assisting them with drug and alcohol addiction, mental health needs and recuperation and recovery.
We also aim to raise community awareness of the needs of ex-service men and women.
About Honour Our Heroes Relay Walk – a day of celebration
Although we’re raising funds for a serious issue – our veterans in need – Honour our Heroes Relay Walk is a fun day. It’s a chance to celebrate our veterans.
Completed in teams of 2-14 people walking around a 3km circuit, the Relay Walk is 42kms in total: honouring the bravery and sacrifice of the 42 Aussie soldiers who gave their lives for our nation in service in Afghanistan.
Throughout the day there will be entertainment for the whole family, including food stalls, coffee, live music and children’s activities. It’s a fun and easy way to make a real difference to the lives of veterans in need. It’s also your chance to raise awareness of the dire challenges many veterans face.
