RSL & Services Clubs Association

How to Apply

Please note: Applications for 2017 KYLC are now open and applications close on 28th April 2017.

Information on the 2017 program can now be downloaded from this website.

To be a KYLC Trekker, you need to be sponsored by your local RSL or Services Club, or another Club in your area. Please approach your local Club first to ask if they are part of the KYLC Program. Click here to see the full list of Clubs who regularly sponsor young people on KYLC.

The RSL & Services Clubs Association also sponsors up to three young people each year. We seek applications from young people from a disadvantaged background who have a family history of participation in the Defence Forces (parent, grandparent or other family member who served). These applications MUST be received before the closing date of 28th April 2017.

The opportunity to participate in a trek across the Kokoda Trail is a privilege akin to a $6000+ scholarship. Participants should therefore understand that it is not a prize, a gift or a right - it is a privileged opportunity to develop personal leadership skills based on the values our Kokoda veterans held dearly - these include personal discipline, mutual respect, trust, mateship, courage and self-sacrifice.

The trek itself is a physically demanding challenge. You will be required to be in adequate physical and medical shape and free of any medical conditions that may prevent them from completing such an arduous personal challenge. You will need to alert us of any potential health problems prior to the trek.
The most important qualities for a successful pilgrimage are a sense of adventure, a positive attitude, a healthy body, an inquiring mind, an abundance of common sense and a good sense of humour.

This year there will be 2 treks:

  • Club Industry Trek: 7th - 18th August 2017. This is open to nominees up to the age of 35 years, who work either in a Club or a business that supplies to the Club industry. This can be used as either a reward for outstanding work, or as a leadership development program for younger staff; and
  • Young People’s Trek: 23rd September – 4th October 2017. This is open to young people aged 17-25 years who have a family military background, come from a socially disadvantaged background, and/or are outstanding local leaders who would benefit from the KYLC.
